If you're not from the DMV area, it's very likely you're unfamiliar with mambo sauce. Part ketchup, vinegar, and hot sauce, the condiment is a Washington, D.C. takeout staple, and it's commemorated through Kevin Durant's fifth signature model—the Nike KD 5 in a "DMV" colorway.
Originally launched in December 2012, the KD 5 joined the Nike Basketball Family at an exciting time for the team. Durant was fresh off of being the leading scorer for Team USA at the 2012 London Olympics, securing a Gold medal for the country. The fifth Nike KD meant to further demonstrate the Swoosh's commitment to and belief in the then-24-year-old as a key component to its future. The two-time NBA champion has since signed a lifetime deal with Nike, reaffirming the partnership in a way that few athletes have been able to enjoy.
According to the trio of X user @zSneakerHeadz, Romania's Sneaker Market, and Sneaker Files, the original "DMV" KD 5 returns during Summer 2027. The sneaker is clad in a "Bright Crimson/Volt/Wolf Grey" color scheme that references the near-fluorescent look of mambo sauce, a favorite condiment of Durant and other native-Washingtonians.

Legendary NIKE, Inc. designer Leo Chang went on-record during the KD 5's initial rollout to discuss a number of D.C.-inspired elements on the Nike Basketball silhouette. Fourteen years ago, the model was marketed with the KD V name. This detail informed a number of triangles incorporated into the sneaker's functional design, while also nodding to Durant's Team USA jersey number in 2012 (#5) and the Pentagon's architecture as a nod to KD's home city. Other elements that told Durant's story in footwear-form include mentions of Seat Pleasant, Maryland and his parents' initials.
Given how Durant's signature Nike Basketball series has panned out over 19 designs, a mambo sauce-inspired sneaker in 2012 was just an early example of storytelling-infused performance product—something that savvy and new fans alike are sure to enjoy when the "DMV" KD 5 returns for its 15th anniversary.
