Nike Kybrid S2 “What The” Releases September 17th
Having made only a brief appearance in our unveiling of the Nike Kyrie S2 Hybrid silhouette, this ominous black-based colorway caused some intrigue. And as it turns out, there was a lot to discover. Detailed looks at the release show that it’s now evident the release runs the recurrent Nike Hoops “What The” thematic, sharing print, character and pattern elements of famous Kyrie releases past. But it’s not just the colorway and its embellishments that are mix-and-match. The silhouette in itself is a What The of sorts, features design elements from Kyries kicks past — this year focusing on the Kyrie Four, Five, and Six. Staring at the base is the Nike Kyrie 4, in which the pair’s sole unit and forefoot are derived. The Kyrie 5’s famous Flytrap lace cover rides the vamp, while the rear-end is ripped straight from the Kyrie 6.
As for the color blocking and mixed bag of motifs — where do we start? Aside from being anchored in an all-over black and blue-grey upper and murdered-out sole units, there’s not one consistent print, pattern or motif to be seen. The left shoe features a Realtree camo print on the forefoot, an oversized All-Seeing eye on the quarters, and a midfoot strap ripped straight from Nike’s Planet of Hoops pack. The right shoe also features a forefoot camo print, this time Bape-style as per his forthcoming “Asia Irving” release, while quarter panels feature three intriguing aspects: tie-dye prints, exposed Nike Air tags, and 3D metallic Swooshes. Liners alternate between straight black and ASE-prints, while each branded motif sports a retrospective finishes, from “Have a Nike Day” smileys to floral embroidery seen way back on the Chinese New Year Kyrie 4. Completing the design are the few remaining consistencies, including coral-piped Flytrap overlays, Barely Volt tongue liners, and split outsoles that form one singular eye motif.
