Like his sister and fellow Doernbecher Freestyle designer Maylee, Sam David was born with spina bifida, but that has definitely not stopped him from tearing up the basketball court. The young man has dreams of playing for the U.S. men’s wheelchair basketball team and has one of the best role models in all of sports as his all-time favorite athlete: LeBron James. Needless to say, Sam David was beyond thrilled to learn he would be designing one of King James’ signature shoes for the 2022 Nike Freestyle collection — “Actually, I was speechless!” he smiled.
His take on the LeBron 19 brings the bling with metallic gold panels, lightning bolts, and his very own sporty wheelchair logo. It also features a very special detail: Nike’s first-ever airbag pod, which encapsulates Sam’s initials, his birth year, and his go-to mantra: Never Back Down. “I want to inspire people to never quit on their dreams,” he said. “If you set your mind to it, there’s no limit to what you can do.”
Now, after being officially revealed as part of the 2022 Doernbecher Freestyle Collection earlier this year, the official Nike.com product imagery for the pair has surfaced, showing Sam David’s design in detail that you’ve never seen before.
