In football, speed is separation and since 1998, Nike has been differentiating itself from the competition with the Mercurial series of boots. It's no surprise, then, that the Oregon-based company will debut the next, most-innovative generation—Vapor 17 and Superfly 11—in time for the 2026 World Cup™, which takes place on home soil.
Part of Nike's "12 Weeks of Football" strategy, the launch of new Mercurial football boots has been long-anticipated by fans and teased by the likes of Kylian Mbappé over the last few months. Vapor 17 and Superfly 11 see the Swoosh at its best as they're testaments to the brand's pursuit of better, all while offering two distinct kinds of speed. The Mercurial Vapor 17 is all about quickness in tight spaces in the franchise's lightest package ever. By comparison, the Mercurial Superfly 11 unlocks breakaway speed with Nike's most-responsive speed system yet.
Both proposals are rooted in and informed by more than 50 years of history in running performance innovation, an aspect championed by Nike co-founders Phil Knight and Bill Bowerman. Each Mercurial design looks to assist footballers like Cristiano Ronaldo, Vini Jr., Sam Kerr, and Salma Paralluelo punish space on football's biggest stages.
"The modern game asks players to be fast in different ways," said James Molyneux, Senior Director, Football Footwear Innovation, in an official announcement. "That’s why Mercurial is now two tools, each built to help athletes create space when it matters most."
Nike Mercurial Vapor 17: The Lightest Mercurial in History

How do you make one of the fastest football boots on the market even faster? Well, for starters, you can start with weight.
At 178 grams (6.3 ounces), Nike's Mercurial Vapor 16 Elite FG is already a lightweight speed boot that still provides some semblance of protection and durability for elite athletes, but the Vapor 17 gets even lighter.
Specific numbers haven't been disclosed by the brand as of writing, but official marketing from the brand state that the latest Vapor boots are "Nike's lightest Mercurial ever." The design team behind the silhouette referenced reductive, sprint-spikes from the company's expansive archive to fine-tune Vapor 17. The end result is a pair of boots that virtually disappears on-foot, improving ball-feel and enabling sharp cuts, quick pivots, and instant bursts of speed. Over the course of 90 minutes, footballers should perceive a reduced burden on the feet thanks to the lightweight design.
Atomknit Upper & FlyLite Plate Tech Specs
How did Nike make the Vapor 17 the lightest Mercurial ever?: Primarily through Atomknit upper and FlyLite plate innovations.
In keeping running performance innovation, the featherweight upper has previously appeared on the AlphaFly marathon racing shoe. Its inclusion on the Vapor 17 is rooted in the same principles of weight-reduction, which allows the football boots to act as an extension of the feet.
An All Conditions Control (ACC) coating brings reliable ball friction and grip to the Atomknit upper, helping footballers keep control of the ball in both wet and dry conditions.

Although the Vapor 17's upper is literally lightweight, its debut white-and-pink color scheme also reflects the reduction in weight.
According to the team behind the lightest Mercs ever, the pair's inaugural colorway features bold pink across the upper's top-half so that the boots' visual execution is viewed vertically. This touches on the idea of lightness that floats up, while also creating an illusion of hovering on-the-pitch.
The ultra-thin FlyLite plate system delivers immediate response underfoot in a less-bulky package than previous sole plates. A cutout above the base's center reduces weight; allows for improved flexibility and enhanced snappiness; and contributes to Vapor 17's visual lightness.
Rounded chevron studs are aligned for start‑stop traction and fast changes in direction, drawing inspiration from track spikes.
"Vapor is obsessed with the first half step," shared Molyneux. "We stripped away everything that didn’t serve quickness, so the boot feels minimal, locked in and immediate. In tight spaces, speed shows up in how fast you can get free.”
Nike Mercurial Superfly 11: Advanced Air Zoom & The Return of a Low-Cut Collar

If you clicked into this story thinking that Nike had prepared two versions of the Mercurial Vapor, you'd be understood because Superfly boots haven't been low-cut since 2014 (Superfly 4). Yet, Superfly 11 marks the return of a low-cut collar, a style famously preferred by CR7.
FlyWeave Ultra & An External Air System Inspired by Marathon Shoes
Superfly 11 abandons the Nike Gripknit, Flyknit, and Atomknit trifecta seen on the Superfly 10 in favor of a FlyWeave Ultra upper. This choice provides a contained fit in a protective-enough execution. The material is also treated with an All Conditions Control coating, ensuring the lightweight upper delivers consistent grip on the ball.
A return to the low-cut collar for the first time in 12 years supports a natural range of motion while offering ample lockdown at speed.
Underfoot, the Superfly 11 design introduces one of Nike Football's most-ambitious projects to date with its visible, external Air Zoom unit.

The Mercurial Superfly franchise has been leveraging the industry-shifting Nike Air platform for generations, but Superfly 11 introduces the line's most-responsive speed system to date.
Informed by marathon racing footwear, the innovative Air Zoom unit is made external. The plump Airbag is positioned under the metatarsals and housed within a newly-engineered structure that both stabilizes the system and preserves performance.
Positioning the new Air Zoom system under the metatarsals allows footballers to directly engage with the speed-oriented setup; the unit compresses with every step of real-play load and responds accordingly as a stride is completed. A special set of three studs was invented to sit on the Air Zoom unit itself, protecting it while also working with the rest of the sole plate to deliver forefoot flex, agility, and control throughout any match.
"Superfly is built for players who turn space into danger," said Molyneux. "The visible Air Zoom system is there on purpose — it’s speed you can point to — and it’s designed to help athletes feel confident going again, especially late in the match when the game opens up."
