The first track shoe released by Nike under their Swoosh banner, 1972’s Cortez has often been attributed to the brand’s initial success. The shoe was introduced to the general public at the peak of the 1972 Summer Olympics. The demand for the shoe grew exponentially nearly immediately after the public noticed that the Nike Cortez was being used by the 1972 U.S. Olympic athletes. In the years proceeding, it went from an iconic runner to popular culture icon, to the streets of LA — and it never once lost its initial charm. In 2022, the universally-loved is preparing for its 50th anniversary — and what better way to celebrate it than tapping LA’s own Union — one of Nike’s strongest partners who happen to hail from a city that embraced the shoe like no other.
First looks at the Union x Nike Cortez provided by solebyjc and apolloluo1976 show two options, both of which feature a rustic and sustainable design overhaul. Anchored in striped burlap, the pairs then present a bevy of suede overlays in wheat/red and slate grey respectively. There’s split-paneling at the signature crimped eyestay overlays, and random forefoot and quarter panels added, too, as well as dual-layered heels complete with Union’s jumping man logo. The brand’s signature tack stitching returns to the tongue, whilst plenty of arcadian finished flood the design, from co-branded cork insoles, to Crater Foam soles.
Though a release date for the Union x Nike Cortez Collection has not yet been announced, it is implied that the pair will release early on in 2022. So, until more details emerge, grab a first look at the pairs here below, and be sure to keep your eyes glued to our official Twitter account for updates.
