@whosmarky x Nike Air Max 1 “Por La Familia” Headlines Nike’s Cultivator Collaborative Capsule

Heading your way on November 1st is a fully-fledged collaborative capsule from Nike, who have tapped some of the culture’s most influential and celebrated cultivators. Each with a story and a killer sneaker that tells it, Nike’s latest endeavor is giving the community a voice. One of those who was lucky enough for the opportunity to create a sneaker in partnership with the Swoosh was @whosmarky, a long-time contributor to the sneaker scene. His pair caught out eye, not only because of its beautifully put together palette but because of the backstory, too.

The Air Max 1 is the silhouette I chose to dedicate the women in my family. Each color symbolizes a part of my life and where I’ve come from. The pink represents the women who raised me. The red and green are a symbol of my Mexican heritage and the gold accent on the back of the shoe represents the “Coat of Arms” in the Salvadorian flag. My family is what got me to where I am today and it’s what inspired me to create this shoe. Throughout the best and worst times, I could always count on them whether it was opening the door to me or making sure there was food for me to eat.

My mom raised me as a single mother and was always working long hours to make sure we had a roof over our head and when she couldn’t even afford groceries, my aunts were always there to help. They always made sure I got to school on time, finished my homework, and made sure I was happy. During those times I felt down and like giving up they were there to help encourage me through their love and positivity. This shoe is for all these women who played a significant role in my life and helped mold me into the person I am today. This story may or may not be relatable to others but it’s not just for women it’s Por La Familia.
