There’s nothing quite like the social phenomenon that is Pokémon. Though only founded in 1996, the Japanese-founded franchise has amassed a whopping $118.5 billion in revenue, placing it at the top of the table when it comes to highest-grossing media franchises — that’s even more than Mickey Mouse, Star Wars, and Nintendo’s Mario. From early video games to anime adaptations, the brand has stayed relevant through the viral “Pokémon Go” app game, to streetwear collaborations with huge names like Hiroshi Fujiwara to adidas. Now, the franchise looks to the Three Stripes arch-rivals in PUMA for a five-piece footwear pack that celebrates the franchise origins; the four most recognizable creatures from the original 151.
For their upcoming collaboration with the franchise, PUMA has selected five different sneakers but only four Pokémon. Pikachu dresses two different silhouettes — the RS-X and the Rider FV — both of which feature a striking yellow and black arrangement akin to the lovable creatures’ fur. The other three releases, the Rider FV, Slipstream Lo, and Suede, cover the first-choice Pokémon from the original games, Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle. All five pairs arrive with special hang tags, co-branded insoles, and come housed in special packaging.
