For over 40 years, Vans has been setting trends. From initially creating functional footwear for non-traditional sports, the brand has evolved into a streetwear icon. Though models like the Old Skool, Vans has experimented with color, material, and print, though the silhouette has largely remained the same since its initial release in 1977.
Of course, as an icon of the fashion world, it has been subject to countless customs and design rip-offs — much like the Air Force 1. From wavy warped designs from MSCHF to 2016’s “Lightning Bolt” design, courtesy of youth fashion influencers Ian Connor and Noah Stutz. That design introduced the Revenge x Storm brand to the masses and quickly became popular among trendsetters and celebrities alike. Though countless legal issues arose, the Revenge x Storm still sells a Vans Old Skool-look-alike, modifying everything from the license plate at the heel to the traction underfoot.
Now, it seems that the shoe is on the other foot, as Vans has issued a Lightning Bolt Old Skool of their own, touching down in several colorways across the globe earlier this month.
Sweeping the side of the silhouette is an oversized lightning bolt delivered in textured rubber and colored trim. Uppers remain relatively simple, with white canvas matched with colored suedes, though there is a modification to the eyestay overlays, as they too feature a jagged cut to mirror the added overlay below.
