In the realm of global fashion, the name COSTS may not ring bells in every corner of the West, but back in its home base of Shenzhen, this 11-year-old fashion label is a force to be reckoned with. Its latest collaboration with ASICS is a testament to its growing influence, offering a fresh take on the GT-2160 model that marries modern style with ancient Chinese traditions.
The journey from last summer's lychee vine-inspired GEL-Lyte III has led COSTS to a unique interpretation of the ASICS GT-2160, under the "This Is Costs Way" concept. This collaboration seeks to intertwine the realms of fashion-forward design and everyday comfort, resulting in a sneaker that's as stylish as it is practical.
Drawing inspiration from the traditional shao ji, a bamboo basket used for washing rice, this new design beautifully translates a piece of Chinese heritage into a contemporary sneaker form. The GT-2160’s design begins with a breathable mesh and textile upper, bathed in a soothing beige tone reminiscent of the natural bamboo material.
Soft suede adorns the shoe from the forefoot to the heel, adding a layer of sophistication and tactile interest. COSTS's signature detailing on the laces and tongue provides an additional layer of uniqueness, making each pair a standout.
Contrasting the beige base is a rich blue hue, a shared favorite of COSTS and ASICS, which adorns the iconic ASICS stripes, GEL technology parts, heel tab, and the outsole. This deep blue not only adds a visual pop but also harmonizes with the overall aesthetic.
Perhaps the most intriguing feature is the sock liner, showcasing various shao ji patterns typical to Southern China, seamlessly blending fashion with a nod to cultural history.
The COSTS x ASICS GT-2160 is slated for release on ASICS.com on November 28th and retails for $140 USD.
