Earlier this year, we reported that 2002’s obscure Jordan Nu Retro 1 Low would be returning to celebrate its 20th anniversary. Though not much else was known about the return, it now appears that things will be kicked off in partnership with a star athlete from their roster, as official Nike.com imagery of a Jayson Tatum x Jordan Nu Retro 1 Low “U City” has emerged.

Inspired by, and utilizing elements of Michael Jordan’s first signature sneaker, the low-top silhouette hit the market with a head of steam back at the turn of the Century, long before the ridicule of Mids and hybrids became ingrained into the culture. You’ll note some fairly obvious callouts to the Air Jordan 1, including toe boxes, and its oversized debossed Wings logos, whilst more contemporary panels, unstructured collars, and modified sole units give the pair its early 00’s charm. Jayson has taken that early century steez, and added a contemporary touch, all whilst paying homage to his hometown of University City, MO.

Honing in on two main hues, the pair looks to striking red toes and tongues before a bevy of two-tone cream overlays engulfs the pair. The oversized Wings motif at the midfoot remains, whilst new detail at the toe shouts out Tatum’s upbringing in Missouri. The back heels read 98 — the year he was brought into the world — while his JT logo at the tongue shows the other end of the spectrum as a pro athlete. The pair comes complete with quilted insoles and four sets of laces.

Take a peep at the Jayson Tatum x Jordan Nu Retro 1 Low “U City” and expect to learn more about the release in the coming weeks. With more details to follow, you’ll want to keep your eyes locked on our Jordan Release Dates Calendarand our Twitter Feedfor further updates.
