Last December, the National Basketball Association's Commissioner, Adam Silver, shared that the league would decide in 2026 whether or not it would proceed with years-long fans' pleas for expansion. Those talks are set to happen as early as next week, reports Shams Charania for ESPN.
The immediate focus is to establish franchises in Las Vegas and Seattle, markets projected to be among the NBA's top-eight revenue generators if expansion goes through. Proposals for both teams are within the range of $7-$10 billion. Each new team is being targeted to start play in the 2028-29 NBA season.
Sources familiar with the matter told ESPN that in both expected voting rounds, 23 of 30 governors must vote in favor of expansion. Otherwise, the idea will be abandoned—perhaps until another time.
Seattle has been without an NBA franchise since 2008 when the SuperSonics relocated to Oklahoma City and rebranded as the Thunder.
