Despite recent color and materials exploration and performance innovation across basketball, running, and tennis, New Balance is still largely associated with boring, grey-colored "dad shoes." While this isn't the most flattering connection, it speaks to the brand's long-standing heritage of meticulously crafted footwear—namely those in the 990 series. Models like the 5030, however, continue to challenge this reputation.

Built with ABZORB cushioning—specifically segmented ABZORB SBS pods at the heel—the New Balance 5030 delivers a compelling style to those who might've found the ABZORB 2000 too "out there" and the ABZORB 2010 a bit reserved. The sole unit setup, however, is only part of the story.

A first look at the 5030 came in mid-January during Paris Fashion Week® thanks to Italy's SLAM JAM. The retailer took the occasion as the right time to unveil a sample of its futuristic footwear collaboration with New Balance. Thanks to SLAM JAM's connection to football—as seen by its AC Milan x PUMA 2026 Fourth Kit—design inspiration behind the 5030's upper was thought to be rooted in "the beautiful game." Designers behind the silhouette, however, told Sole Retriever that football was not thought about during the sneaker's development. Instead, the budget-friendly New Balance 530 was.

Even a quick glance at both the 530 and 5030 doesn't produce any confusion between the designs. Instead, close inspection of the curved lines across the latter's upper reveals some connection to the trendy 530, which has been a go-to sneaker for fashionable girls and women. Whereas SLAM JAM's previewed sample favors a shiny, "in-your-"face" finish, inaugural inline releases opt for matte textile finishes. "White/Magic Blue" and "Black/Electric Indigo" options are up first, but a handful of more colorways are scheduled to drop over the next year as New Balance looks to make the 5030 a possible "it" shoe.

Enjoy detailed e-commerce shots of the future-forward sneaker ahead. Debut pairs of the 5030 land on NewBalance.com on Wednesday, April 1. The 5030 retails for $120.
