In a move that’s now been rumored to transfer to Nike and Dior’s Kim Jones, New Balance spearheaded a unique approach of collaborating with those behind the scenes of the world’s biggest fashion houses instead of the brand themselves. Sure, this results in subsequently less cachet, but what it loses in brand appeal it makes up in broader design freedom from the collaborative genius. Versace’s Salehe Bembury (previously Payless, Cole Haan, and YEEZY) is the first to deliver on this initiative, who brings with him a wealth of expertise in his role as VP of Sneakers & Men’s Footwear — and likely many ideas that can’t be implemented under the Versace brand umbrella.

Now, after first teasing the collaboration earlier in the year, Bembury is back with another prevue as to what’s to come, this time unveiling the pair’s inspired mantra of “Peace Be The Journey” along with the release’s special-edition packaging. And while the release itself still hovers behind a huge question mark — or in this case, orange coral — the boxing does provide some possible insight into its construction. A sunken riverbed in a desert gorge, along with the coral of the aforementioned coral, suggests an outdoor-inspired release — now confirmed to be inspired by the breathtaking Antelope Canyons of Arizona.

Update 07.14.20 John Mayer has given us a first look at the Salehe Bembury x New Balance collaboration, and it appears to hold heavy influence from the New Balance 2002R. Here we see thick waffle-like mesh uppers in golden yellow overlayed by rich maroon pigskin, shaggy orange suedes, and the previously-sighted silver-lined fluffy N motifs. The pair comes complete with outdoor-inspired flecked midsoles — split between white and maroon (and orange at the heel), and it rests atop a maroon rubber outsole. Take a look at the pair here below, and with more looks and release dates to follow, be sure to keep your eyes locked on our official Twitter account for updates.
