New Air Max 95 “Safari” Arrives in ACG-Inspired Aesthetic
Tinker Hatfield first utilized animal prints on footwear back in ’87, and over the course of the three decades since, it’s worked its way up to a staple ingredient in any brand’s pantry. From the original Air Safari came the Air Jordan 3‘s elephant print, and the rest was history. We’ve seen everything from the famous atmos Air Max 1 “Elephant” to Kith’s Nike Air Pippen “Chimera”, a few Foamposites, and too many snakeskin sneakers to count. Some are more subtle than others, whilst some tackle the overarching Safari theme. Now the thematic returns to the 25th-anniversary Air Max, with this Air Max 95 “Safari” set to hit stores early next month.
This pair really feels like an African excursion, with safari-suit bone, arid orange, and the jungle’s green totaling up the aesthetic. Uppers arrive in canvas – the breathable Summer staple fabrication — with tonal cargo-like netting overlays adding to the utilitarian feel. The anatomical profile panels work their way down from a tough Zebra-print, to a tumbled bone leather and a mossy green suede. The lowermost overlay again arrives in tumbled bone leather, as does the toe cap. Forest Green eyelets work with neutral suede medial panels to lock-in some colorful ACG-like lace options, whilst tongue and sock liners come capped in orange. African-inspired insoles pop with a wide range of rich colors which are also mimicked on the tongue, and subtly throughout the sneaker in places like the purple heel branding and Air supports, teal pops underfoot, and golden yellow on the profile Swoosh. Capping off the wild design is an aged-look sail sole unit, a classic black rubber outsole, and a seemingly juxtaposed digital “NIKE AIR” branding strike underfoot.
