Nike Sportswear is reimagining the beloved Air Max 95 as a hiking shoe, bringing a "Wheat" color scheme and functional modifications to the classic running shoe.
A big bubble Air Max unit underfoot keeps things familiar while the nature-inspired upper gets a tonal, molded-like update that seemingly provides water-resistance that standard suede-and-mesh construction doesn't. The "chiseled" aesthetic continues onto the tongue, which is partly made from what appears to be some sort of extra-durable canvas or mesh material. Red-colored rope laces pass through metal grommets that replace traditional laces and their lace loops, driving home the connection to footwear for the trails.
Based on official product shots of the "Wheat" Air Max 95, the outsole hasn't been tweaked to withstand the wear-and-tear of hiking, but the "Gum Medium Brown" tread is more than capable of some walking off-road. In any case, the upper's update allows the Air Max model look right at home with any "gorpcore" outfit.
