LeBron James’ time with the Los Angeles Lakers appears to be coming to an end.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, James has informed the Lakers that he intends to continue his NBA career elsewhere for the 2026–27 season. The report states that Los Angeles wanted the four-time NBA champion back, but James has decided to move on and enter free agency with plans to join a new team.
The decision would close out an eight-season run in Los Angeles, highlighted by the Lakers’ 2020 NBA championship. James arrived in LA in 2018 and helped return the franchise to the top of the league, while also adding another major chapter to one of the most decorated careers in basketball history.
The news immediately sent the NBA world into speculation mode, with the Golden State Warriors already being mentioned as a potential landing spot. A move to the Bay would pair James with longtime rival Stephen Curry, creating one of the most surreal superstar combinations the league has ever seen.
Shortly after the report surfaced, Fanatics and multiple retailers appeared to discount LeBron’s Lakers jerseys, adding more fuel to the idea that his time in purple and gold is nearing its official end.
For now, no new team has been confirmed, but one thing seems clear: LeBron is not done yet. After 23 NBA seasons, the league’s all-time leading scorer is preparing for another chapter — just not in Los Angeles.
