Liga MX's Pumas Says Farewell to Nike with Jerseys Inspired by Ciudad Universitaria

Regardless of which club you believe to be el más grande de México, there's no denying that Club Universidad Nacional—best known as Pumas UNAM—plays an important role in the country's football history. Ahead of Apertura 2025, the Universitarios have unveiled their final Nike-sponsored jerseys before moving to PUMA.

Long-rumored by savvy football enthusiasts, the return to PUMA for Pumas (are you following?) is a blow to many fans of the Swoosh's uniforms for their beloved club. As history tells it, however, the Mexico City-based Liga MX team may eventually rekindle its relationship with Nike, just as it did with PUMA, which manufactured kits for the club from 2009-2014.

As with so many of Pumas UNAM's kits since 1954, the new Nike jerseys feature a combination of gold and blue colors. The two-tone duo has gone on to inspire the club's Auriazules moniker.

While it's unsure whether or not the design team went into the kit knowing it would be the brand's last for the Mexican side, the folks from the Swoosh didn't disappoint. The 25/26 Home shirt includes a shallow v-neck opening, which plays with dark blue accents on the sides to create the illusion of an open collar. A swoosh appears at the top of the chest on both jerseys, opting for an eye-catching golden finish. The Home shirt enjoys an off white base that allows for the puma head and stripes on the center of the shirt to revel in the spotlight. The enlarged details reference accents on the Estadio Olímpico Universitario, the multi-purpose stadium in which Pumas UNAM (and sometimes Cruz Azul) plays.

By contrast, the 25/26 Away jersey finds inspiration in the greater campus of Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). The university's circular Espacio Escultórico is recreated around the golden puma head on the front of the shirt. Both shirts feature the club's myriad of sponsors on all sides, with a stamp shaped like the team's concrete stadium appearing on the inner neck area.
