Nike is gearing up to celebrate the beloved Air Max 95 with a special edition dedicated to Liverpool, a city deeply connected to the iconic sneaker.
The Air Max 95's association with Liverpool isn't new. The model has long been a favorite in the city, reflecting its vibrant culture and spirited community. Nike previously acknowledged this connection in 2015 when British retailer JD Sports introduced a red-accented Air Max 95 colorway as an homage to Liverpool FC. This upcoming release aims to deepen that relationship, tying the sneaker explicitly to Liverpool FC and, by extension, to the city’s identity.
The Liverpool Air Max 95's official color description—"Black/Gym Red-Smoke Grey"—helped imagine the pair before speculative mock-ups or early shots of the project surfaced. Instagram user @am110s, however, has provided a first-look at the sneaker, putting to rest all doubt.
The design's signature gradient presentation reprises its role atop Liverpool's own Nike Air Max. Panels closest to the net along the tongue take on shades of "Black" that allow for "Gym Red" flair to revel in the spotlight. Traditional airmax text on the top of the tongue remains intact, opting for a finish that features the AM95's color palette. The tongue's underside abandons sizing information in favor of the English club and city's iconic, mythical liver bird emblem. Footbeds also reference the team's "You'll Never Walk Alone" (Y.N.W.A.) anthem via a special stitched-on tag.
The year 2025 is significant for the Air Max 95, marking the 30th anniversary of the sneaker’s debut. Nike's celebration of this milestone includes: a return to the model's Big Bubble construction atop the original "Neon" colorway and a collaboration with Nike SB.
It's uncertain whether or not either party involved knew this before the football-inspired AM95 went into production, but the year will also see Liverpool FC leave the Swoosh for a return to Adidas. The change takes effect on August 1, making the special Air Max one of the last ventures between the partners (for the foreseeable future, at least).
