Where to Buy the Nike Air Force 1 CO.JP “Wheat Mocha”
Back in the early-2000s, the sneaker industry — Nike in particular— was in the midst of an evolution. Jordan Brand was testing out brand-new non-OG colorways on their expansive and dominating retro linage — the Retro+ range — to great success, while Sandy Boedecker’s Nike SB division started tinkering with classics like the Dunk to see just how far they could push the limits of creativity in design. Meanwhile, in Japan, Nike was releasing some of the most elusive and trendsetting sneakers of the era as a part of its “CO.JP” or “Concept Japan” program. Mind you, this was happening in the pre .com era for sneakers, meaning that the CO.JP series of releases in Japan was more of an “if you know you know” existence for sneakerheads in the United States. Back in a time were local lineups was the only perceived way to cop a release — long before eBay reselling and StockX — it forced people to get creative and find back-channel ways to secure regional sneakers. Among those undertaking every necessary step to secure pairs was Ronnie Fieg, owner of NYC-based Kith, who has made it public just how important a role these releases played in his long-standing relationship with footwear.
“I was doing everything possible from my bedroom in Queens to get my hands on them,” said Fieg via Instagram. “Hunting online, trying to make connections overseas, etc. To this day, the CO.JP AF1s are some of my favorite ever … Moments like these are why I truly love footwear.” — Ronnie Fieg
The CO.JP Air Force 1s are still so ingrained in Ronnie’s mind, that he not only decorated the ceiling of his new Tokyo flagship with iron-cast AF1s, but also got the chance to deliver his own regional-exclusive AF1 in commemoration.
The comeback has been on for the CO.JP series in 2020, with releases like the “Samba” and trio of “Ugly Duckling” Dunk Lows, as well as the duo of Japan Air Jordan 1s — and now its time for the Uptown to join the party, with a return of the working boot-inspired Nike Air Force 1 CO.JP “Wheat” for Fall, just one year shy of its 20th anniversary.
Part of a three-piece Air Force 1 B CO.JP pack from ’01 which included the recently-retro’d “Hong Kong”, the Reflective Snakeskin, and this boot-inspired release. Sporting the smooth, buttery tones of a Timberland work boot, the pair features a tan suede upper with a tonal Swoosh, Mocha hits along the collar, branding, and outsole, and a mid gum midsole made famous by the humble Timberland.
