Nike Reinstate the Yardrunners Series With the Air Force 1 Low “VUU Panthers”
Nike’s Yardrunners program, created in 2020, highlights the contributions of Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs) through collaborative footwear designed by alumni. The next release from this initiative comes from stylist Dex Robinson, who has crafted a special Air Force 1 for his alma mater, Virginia Union University.
Dex Robinson is known for his impactful work styling athletes for pre-and post-game appearances, collaborating with high-profile players like Jalen Hurts and Tyrod Taylor. He also founded the streetwear brand DIALLO, which has gained popularity among trendsetters, including Offset and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Robinson joined the Nike Yardrunners program in 2021, featuring prominently in its annual campaign and styling models for subsequent collections.
The Air Force 1 “VUU Panthers” draws inspiration from the university's panther mascot, featuring a striking design crafted from faux black pony hair that echoes the aesthetics of a 2019 Air Jordan 4 and a women’s Air Force 1 from 2016. Several standout details, including an iridescent border around the Swoosh, pebbled leather accents on the tongue and back, and semi-translucent gum soles underneath, further enhance this unique material. The shoe is completed with black and red rope laces and various metal dubraes, celebrating the school’s 160th anniversary.
While specific release information for the Nike Air Force 1 “VUU Panthers” has yet to be announced, there are indications that the shoes may be released locally in Virginia this November.
