The Detroit Pistons Air Force 1 Low “NBA Finals ’89” Releases Tomorrow!
3-Peat? Nah, Sweep.
The buildup to the 1989 NBA Finals was something else. Both ranked #1 seed in their respective divisions, the Finals saw the favorite LA Lakers battle it out for their third consecutive NBA title in a rematch of the ’88 series a year prior. Magic Johnson had just come off winning his second NBA MVP and had not dropped a single game heading into the big dance, sweeping Portland, Seattle, and Phoenix along the way. The Pistons had it easy-ish, too. After winning 63 games on the year, they went into the postseason sweeping the Celtics and Bucks, but the Michael Jordan-led Bulls pushed the Pistons to six games.
The stage was set for a display of epic proportions. What we got, though, was something else. Laker guard Byron Scott suffered a hamstring injury in practice before game 1 started and was ruled out for the series. Game 2 saw Magic Johnson also pull his hammie, again, ruled out for the series. With no backcourt, the Lakers, and their chance of a three-peat, were doomed. Detroit swept the Lakers in one of the most anti-climactic Finals series ever, and the poor old Lakers have to live with being the only team to sweep their way into the Finals, only to be Swept themselves at the final stage.
Nikewill be honoring Detroit’s efforts in ’89 with a special edition Air Force 1 Low, which arrives in a Pistons palate of Red, White, and Blue. It’s all-red patent leather upper comes with architectural detailing on the Swoosh and heel panels, representative of the Palace of Auburn Hills exterior. it’s paired with white leather overlays, laces, liner, and midsole, with pops of blue ushered in on the tongue and semi-translucent outsole. “’89” motifs arrive embroidered in gold on the lateral heel, along with matching debossed Nike Air heel branding, and the sneaker is completed with mismatched insoles, the left foot reading “Just Do It” in an NBA Finals-themes font, the Right shoe shouting out the D.
Take in an official look at the pair below, which is expected to arrive at select stores and Nike.com this June.
