Before Nike went the whole ham on their iconic ACG linage, they broke the trail-trainer molds by dabbling in a little project called Hike Nike. The eye-popping flashes of purple, fuchsia, orange, and royal — amongst others — set against earthy base hues literally popped off the shelves against a sea of white and black-based sneakers of the 1980s. It played a pivotal role in the ACG’s early years, and obviously had an influence on other Nike divisions, too. 1991’s Nike Air Huaracheis but one of many that fall under that umbrella, with Tinker Hatfield’s design — along with his ACG Air Mowabb from the same annum — popping with striking, saturated hues against simplistic anchor colors. But whilst ACG gets more love in the modern arena, Nike hasn’t forgotten its roots, often honoring the Hike Nike project on several occasions.

The next, this Nike Air Huarache “Hike Nike”, is done so subtly that only the well-informed would notice. A quick glance at the lateral Nike-branded tag shows a direct nod to the throwback project, but sadly, there’s no sign of the bearded Hike Nike man to be seen. It is tributed in other ways, though, with a heritage-inspired palette of black and whit set against a striking mix of royal, gold, and orange — as well as a glorious gum outsole to boot. It’s fixtures pay tribute, too, with shaggy suede overlays, chenille tongues, and toggle laces working with Huarache-staple nylons and neoprenes to complete the design.

Though a release date did not accompany the official image set below, you should expect to see pairs of the Nike Air Huarache “Hike Nike” hit select retailers soon.
