Air Max 2090 “Evolution of Icons” Honors Air Max Era of ’90-’91

Aside from the transcendent Air Jordan lineage, there’s no other series of sneakers with a more storied past than Nike’s Air Max. Nike knows this and has never been afraid to celebrate its own efforts across commemorative collections over the years. Their next series to do so, Evolution of Icons, is doing things a little differently than collections past. Each release unveiled has identified a short timeline in Air Max history, then embraced design elements from within the window. For example, the just-revealed Air Max 270 React honored a timeline from 1993 through 1995, including key features from the Air Max 95, Air Max2 Light, and Air Max 93. Under the same premise, this Air Max 2090 “Evolution of Icons” digs into the archives, though this time a bit further back to the 1990-91 era of Air Max.

Quite obviously, the pair present in two instantly recognizable OG colorways; the Air Max 90 “Infrared” is hybridized here with the fan-favorite Air Max 180 “Ultramarine”, made all the more easy thanks to its shared use of neon crimson. Fine textile uppers, soft white suede overlays, and translucent outsoles at the Air unit channel the 180, while the signature leather mudguard and rear overlays are unmistakably Air Max III. A closer inspection reveals elements of the OG Air Max BW, too, with rubberized Persian Violet Swooshes that borrows its mold straight from the original, retro-inspired tongue branding, purple collars and rear booties, and a toe cap that bears a strong resemblance to the BW.

A release date for the Nike Air Max 2090 “Evolution of Icons” did not arrive alongside the official image set below, but you should expect to see these hitting select stores and Nike.com in full-family sizing in the lead-up to March’s annual Air Max Day celebration.
