Nike Air Max 90 “Griffey” Honors the Kid’s Home Run Derby Backwards Cap
The 25th-anniversary celebration of the Nike Air Griffey Max 1 is expanding beyond the famed trainer with a multi-faced collection of footwear options inspired by The Kid’s career. From the ridiculous Spider-Man Catch to being part of the League’s first father/son duo. Now Nike looks to an infamous image of Junior knocking out dingers at the 1994 All-Star Home Run Derby with a backward cap. It drew a little ire from opposing manager Buck Showalter when he skippered the Yankees. Showalter was quoted in 1994 as saying “… a guy like Ken Griffey Jr., the game’s boring to him. He comes on the field, and his hat’s on backward, and his shirttail’s hanging out.”
Mariners fans quickly rallied behind Griffey, booing Showalter when the Yankees came to town — there were even rumors Griffey’s Hall of Fame plaque might show him wearing the cap backward. Although that didn’t eventuate, it has made its way to this celebratory Air Max 90 “Griffey” which shows a Mariners-colored cap atop the tongue and insole.
Elsewhere you’ll find Seattle-inspired hue of navy (liners) and teal (Air cassettes), and Cincinnatti Red are the toe, forefoot Swoosh, and heel. Baseball-like stitching arrives at the ankle, with everything from the white textile uppers to the suede and leather overlays arriving in monochrome hues.
