Nike's Big Bubble Air Max 95 Appears in A Stealthy 'Black' Finish

In 1995, Sergio Lozano was tasked with creating that year's marquee Nike Air Max silhouette. But he wasn't meant to just follow design guidelines seen on previous models–he was encouraged to develop something neither the Swoosh nor the world had seen before. Enter: The Air Max 95.

Aptly named after its launch year, Lozano's creation departed from the aesthetics propagated by the bulk of the Pacific Northwestern company's product lineup. Premium materials not often found on performance running models came together across a predominantly greyscale upper – which itself was inspired by striations found across the Grand Canyon and the human anatomy. Early iterations left many folks at Nike skeptical, but Lozano's design was ultimately green-lit as it accomplished what it has to: revolutionize the space just as Tinker Hatfield had with the original Air Max 1 eight years prior.

Since '95, Lozano's silhouette has become one of the company's most iconic designs. It's been at the center of inline seasonal collections, as well as high-profile collaborations with the likes of Stash, A Ma Maniére, and atmos.

With its 30th anniversary underway, the sneaker will return in its debut 'Neon' color scheme. And while not the first time the eye-catching look is reissued, the impending release will feature a Big (Air Max) Bubble instead of the smaller unit that's appeared on most retros over the last 30 years.

The original plump Airbag wasn't eco-friendly, so the gas used to inflate the visible Air unit at the heel was replaced. In the process, the Air Max bubble at the heel was reduced in size and pressure. The 'Neon' Air Max 95 Big Bubble, however, offers the closest thing to Lozano's original design in quite some time. In addition to boasting PSI levels closer to pairs from 1995 (visible from the outsole), the Big Bubble style features an Air unit at the heel with a seam running around the middle. Standard versions of the beloved silhouette haven't included this detail.

The latest offering from Nike Sportswear to include the Big Bubble seam is an unassuming, predominantly 'Black' option. The style features a number of materials across its layered mudguards, which feature a subtle blue trim. Branding hits take on a stealthy makeover that blends into its surroundings, while the plump Airbag at the feel deviates in the aforementioned blue.
