Nike Honors the Iconic Nintendo 64 with a Special Edition Air Max 97
Nike Air Max 97 x Nintendo 64. Who’d have thought two 90’s icons would meet two decades on? I’m sure as hell surprised. and excited, all at once. After all, growing up in the 1990s was enough of a blessing. It was a melting pot of culture, where everything from music, to fashion to sports came into its own. The decade birthed many things, from the bonafide sports endorsement to sneaker culture in the mainstream (thanks, Will Smith) — but it also established an entirely new subculture: Gamers. Sure, video games had been around since the 70s, but the 90s was the first era to grab the bull by the horns, so to speak, introducing a flurry of classic consoles for home play — and one of those is to be celebrated on an equally quintessential 90s staple, the Nike Air Max 97. This “Nintendo 64” Air Max 97 Play honors Nintendo’s most celebrated console with a special edition colorway, and it’s fitting, both having released to market mere months apart back in 1996/97.
The pair arrives anchored down in grey mesh, in reference to the console’s controller, it comes adorning matching upper overlays, laces and a mudguard glazed with all-over PLAY motifs. The 64’s 3D “N” logo is honored through the splashed of green, blue, red and yellow throughout, colors which also match the vintage controllers buttons. The silver tongue pulls rock three small dots — mimicking the control input slot on the console’s front — and the tongues displaying “POWER” on the right and “RESET” . on the left — you guessed it, just like the 64. Completing the design is a graphic printed insole styled in an ESRB Game Rating icon and a Nintendo-shaped Air Max motif on the heels.
Pairs of the Nintendo 64 Air Max 97 are set to hit select Swoosh stockists and Nike.com over the coming months, perhaps to coincide with the console’s 23rd birthday on September 26th – but at this stage that is just speculation, so make sure you keep your eyes locked on our Nike Release Dates pages for drop-date updates!
