Nike Air Presto “Origins” Honors its Original Characters
Currently celebrating a very low-key birthday, 2000’s Nike Air Presto has frequently been visiting 20-year history for inspiration in 2020. We’ve seen unreleased Olympic samples, including Australia and the US, and Nike even took a trip back to Tobie Hatfirled’s first sketches of the sneaker on the recently-released “Soar” colorway. The next effort, aptly titled “Origins”, looks back at the silhouette’s initial colorways and their obscure, borderline offensive cartoon characters.
In the early 2000s, Nike introduced eccentric fictional characters to personify the Air Presto. From print ads to television, the Air Presto’s irreverent advertising campaign in 2000 characterized each shoe with playful, animated illustrations. The unconventional names embodied each colorway and the silhouette was described as a “T-Shirt for the foot.” Original characters Brutal Honey, Rabid Panda, Unholy Cumulus, Rogue Kielbasa, Shady Milkman, and more feature across a colorful patchwork-printed Neoprene upper. Elsewhere, the sneaker remains relatively calm, with simple white and black accents gracing the lacecage, laces, pulls, and outsoles. Completing the design is a set of mismatched insoles.
