The legend that was Jackie Robinson continues to influence more than baseball. His resilience and greatness during the 1940s has inspired countless athletes and individuals to stand up to adversity in an act of communal defiance. With Major League Baseball's commemorative day taking place tomorrow, April 15, Nike has unveiled its latest footwear style honoring the Brooklyn Dodgers icon: A special Cortez.
Reminiscent of other projects by Nike Sportswear, the vintage running silhouette takes on a "Photon Dust/Metallic Silver/Gym Red/Black" color scheme. While simple at first glance, the ensemble features Robinson's iconic 42 jersey number on the heels. Baseball-inspired stitching also joins the mix, honoring the sport that inspired the Air Max 270 City Connect Collection. Shimmering accents appear across profile swooshes and a pair-specific label on the top of the tongue. The textile and suede iteration of the Nike Cortez rounds out the nod to the first Black player in the MLB's modern era with an all-over print on the insoles.
