Like many basketball-specific sneakers from the bygone era, the Nike Dunk has become more impactful off the court than on it. But if you know about the sneaker’s history, and the history of the sport behind it, you’ll recognize that the sneaker is and always will be an icon of basketball. Honoring that biography, Nike often celebrates parts of the game — big or small — on the silhouette. Nike Dunk High “Wolf Grey” (Be True to Your School), which looks back 37 years to the silhouette’s debut college collection.
A first glance at the pair wouldn’t lead you to see that these are in any way shape or form inspired by the BTTYS collection, with its unassuming monochrome white and grey blocking. Its heavily-tumbled leather upper and soft suede overlays is in no way reminiscent of the OG materials used, either. There is a hint of heritage deployed at the laces and midsoles, but it’s not until you peer at the insoles or outsole before you see the connection, as both feature a collage of cut-outs from the original 1985 campaign.
