Nike is no stranger to imbuing footwear with personal and emotional narratives, and the upcoming Nike KD 16 "Aunt Pearl" is a heartwarming testament to this tradition. With its inception in the Nike Zoom KD 4, the “Aunt Pearl” theme has become an annual tribute by NBA superstar Kevin Durant to honor the memory of his late Aunt Pearl, who bravely battled breast cancer.
As a philanthropic and stylistic homage, the "Aunt Pearl" line has, over the years, comprised 12 poignant designs. Each release contributes to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, a charitable organization supporting women's cancer research.
This year, the KD 16 iteration embraces the legacy with renewed fervor. Taking color-blocking cues from its predecessor, the KD 15, the KD 16 "Aunt Pearl" envelops the entirety of its engineered mesh upper and leather overlays in gentle shades of soft pink. The color scheme extends to the Zoom-infused sole unit underfoot, reminiscent of a delicate rose petal.
Adding depth and contrast, a subtle white trim graces the full-length mid-foot panel. The palette is further enriched by hot pink, which lends an additional layer of vibrancy within the medial TPU plate and upper eye stays.
In what can be viewed as a delightful surprise, Nike has also hinted that the "Aunt Pearl" theme will grace the KD 3 for the first time.
The release is expected to hit retailers on October 27th.
