The aptly-titled Nike React cushioning hit the market with a spring in its step back in 2018, where the Nike React Element 87 took the world by storm. The model’s success was short-lived, but the ultra-comfortable tech made such an impression, that it was quickly transferred to everything from Nike Prestos to hoops shoes. It’s been a minute, though, since we’ve seen a marquee release that focuses on the cushioning, but 2022 has something new — the Nike React Atlas — and it’s by far the cushioning’s most audacious effort yet.
Though details on its tech specifications, and to that extent, the shoe’s intended purpose (somewhere between a runner and an urban explorer, we’re tipping) remain a mystery, we can piece together some key elements from the shoe’s official imagery. Keen eyes will notice it’s olive woven upper is akin to that seen on the Air Max 720, with indented patterns and plastic overlays that are reminiscent of the 2019 release. Its low-gloss aqua and black midsole follows on from the organic patterns of the upper, with protruding and sunken shapes forming in the React foam, whilst inserts of tech work at the midfoot and heel, complete with a topographic-like indentation all-over. its traction is kept simple but again follows the amoeba-like shaping underfoot. There’s plenty more to be found, including textile overlays, muted gold Swoosh plates, and vibrant color pops in the heel, and much, much more.
