Talk about Rare Air — a pair of Michael Jordan’s game-worn Nike Air Ships from his rookie season just sold for a record $1.472 Million at Sotheby’s auction
The record-setting auction was held on October 24th at the ARIA Resort & Casino in Las Vegas as part of Sotheby’s “Icons of Excellence & Haute Luxury” collection which included everything from rare designer handbags, fine timepieces, and sports cars, to in-vogue sports collectibles and rare sneakers. The latter included the MJ-worn sneakers which were worn in Mike’s fifth-ever NBA game for the Chicago Bulls against the Denver Nuggets on November 1st, 1984.

The pair was authenticated by Sotheby’s, confirming that Tommy Tim III Lewis, the Denver Nuggets ball boy during that game, received the signed pair from a young MJ that fateful night in Denver. Estimates provided in the lead-up to the auction had projected the game-worn Air Ships to easily surpass the $1 million mark — and that they did.
According to a statement issued by Sotheby’s, the auction winner was notable sports trading card collector Nick Fiorella; Yes, the same man who reportedly dropped a whopping $4.6 million for a Luca Doncic rookie card – the fourth most expensive card ever sold.
Of course, rare sneaker sales are nothing new for Sotheby’s who have recently auctioned off Mike’s original Space Jam PEs from the 1996 film, to organizing private sales of rare Air Yeezys.
