There’s always a home for the weird and wonderful in Tokyo.
When the Nike Air Footscape launched way back in 1996 – as with any radical design back then – it wasn’t received well buy the genera pop. Perhaps it was ugly, but in hindsight it was definitely ahead of it’s time. Back then it was crossing the line of ultra-modern, but nowadays it looks like something you’d expect from either Nike or Adidas.
But back then, it’s extended sock bootie, chunky sole unit and asymmetrical lacing system was a little too much for the market. But there’s always somewhere you can fit in, right? And naturally, it developed a cult-like following in the global epicentre of weirdness – Tokyo.
To celebrate Tokyo city’s open arms, Nike have served up two special edition versions of the Air Footscape Mid Utility. An olive version features a topographic representation of Tokyo. Iconic locations such as Harajuku and the Watari Museum of Contemporary Art are highlighted on the prints contoured lines. Both designs feature oversized Swooshes on the left shoe and the classic Footscape logo on the right.
Both colorways of the Nike Air Footscape Mid Utility ‘Tokyo’ will release today, March 8th, via select stockists.
