Over the last 25 years, the Swoosh conglomerate has made a concerted effort of treat product anniversaries as year-long occasions. Ahead of the Air Max 95's 30th birthday, the Oregon-based company announced the Big Bubble revival of the sneaker's iconic 'Neon' style. While special, the move was partly expected given the last retro coincided with its 25th anniversary. What's completely caught the sneaker space by surprise, however, is a report that Sergio Lozano's design will celebrate the milestone with two makeovers inspired by the Air Muscle featured in the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise.

As reported by Sneaker News, the duo is expected to release throughout autumn in color schemes that blend heritage with more modern sensibilities. One of the pairs is expected in a "White/Wolf Grey/Dark Smoke Grey/Cool Grey" ensemble that reads similar to the original Air Max 95. The "White" tone, however, could present Lozano's creation in a whole new way. The accompanying option reportedly features a much more vibrant finish across its running-informed design. The same "Psychic Blue" set to land on an Air Foamposite One allegedly sets the stage for a "Mystic Navy/Stone Blue/Volt" color trifecta that could reference Joe Wheeler's (Katsuya Jonouchi in the original Yu-Gi-Oh! manga) signature outfits.

It's important to remember that this report has yet to be confirmed by Nike, Inc. itself, although the project makes sense for the brand.

During Fall 2024, the Oregon-based institution launched a footwear collaboration with Bandai Namco Studios and Arika's Tekken 8. The special Air Foamposite One duo drew inspiration from an overlooked part of one of the game's character's (Kazuya Mishima) backstories.

Furthermore, the Swoosh conglomerate has cemented its presence within Epic Games' Fortnite via in-game sneakers. Some product has even launched virtually before heading to shelves IRL (e.g. Nike Baltoro). The .SWOOSH initiative has led the company's charge into the world of gaming and internet culture, delivering an Air Max 1 inspired by Donkey Kong, for example.

An Air Muscle-inspired set of the Nike Air Max 95, then, would serve as another piece of the Swoosh's strategy to expand outside of sports—and in particular into the world of nostalgic pop culture. The move would also showcase the brand's attention to history, which includes an important part not originally planned by it.

Within Yu-Gi-Oh!, the Air Muscle is a widely-coveted sneaker across Japan in the mid-1990s. Wheeler is able to get his feet into a pair at a high expense and risk, demonstrating its importance to the character. The story goes that manga-creator, Kazuki Takahashi, was inspired by real-life events—namely robberies of innovative sportswear product from the U.S.—for the inclusion of the Air Max 95-reminiscent sneaker in his series.

What's curious about the reported project is that an official licensing deal between the Japanese franchise and the Swoosh would likely mean that the Yu-Gi-Oh! partnership with Adidas has come to an end.

The two collaborators released a handful of products between October 2022 and June 2023. Offerings primarily focused on Yugi Moto, Seto Kaiba, and their most iconic cards. Every item ultimately sold out, but in comparison to the rumored Air Muscle by Nike, none boasted an authentic connection to Takahashi's creation.

Enjoy a closer look at the fictional sneaker's place in the world of Yu-Gi-Oh! below, and stay tuned for official details on the potential project. Each pair is reportedly priced at $200, and will likely arrive in limited quantities if they release. Apparel—including a Nike Destroyer Jacket and Solo Swoosh Tees—is anticipated to form part of a larger collaborative collection.
