Pokémon Reveals Pikachu 1996 Style Plush and Keychain
Release
Soon
Pokémon is continuing to lean into its early-era nostalgia as the franchise approaches its 30th anniversary, with the reveal of a new Pikachu 1996 Style Plush and matching keychain. Inspired by the character’s earliest appearance when Pokémon first debuted in 1996, the new collectibles recreate Pikachu using a retro, pixel-inspired design.
The throwback aesthetic reflects the visual style of the original Pokémon games released on the Game Boy. Instead of the smooth, rounded Pikachu fans see today, this plush features simplified, blocky facial details that mirror the pixel-art graphics of the franchise’s early years. The character’s eyes, cheeks, and markings all carry a squared-off look reminiscent of classic sprites.
The release includes two versions of the nostalgic design. A full-sized plush brings the retro Pikachu to life in soft fabric form, while a smaller keychain version allows fans to attach the character to bags or backpacks. Both pieces maintain the same 1996-inspired style, complete with grey accents and pixelated facial features.
The timing of the announcement also aligns with the growing wave of merchandise celebrating Pokémon’s upcoming 30th anniversary. With the franchise first launching in 1996, 2026 marks three decades of Pokémon games, characters, and cultural impact — and retro-inspired products like this plush serve as a direct tribute to the era where it all began.
The Pikachu 1996 Style Plush and matching keychain are expected to release soon through Pokémon Center. Other recent additions to Pokémon’s 30th anniversary collections include a PUMA sneaker collab.
