The name "George Roy Roberts" might not ring a bell, but the founder of INSIDE TAG has been archiving and curating obscure, vintage footwear for sale for a handful of years. In 2019, he stumbled upon an old school PUMA silhouette, which ultimately led to an obsession with the UR Mostro, the original version of Peter Schmid's design. Today, the archivist and collector has announced his very own collaboration with the Big Cat brand.
Dubbed the "Communication Pack," INSIDE TAG's PUMA UR Mostro duo is rooted in the German sportswear brand's heritage while also drawing from Roberts' life. The "Warm White/Light Straw"-colored pair, for example, harkens back to 2006, a time when the brand owner used the Sony Ericsson Walkman w810i to share music with friends. By comparison, the "Haute Coffee" option references trail-ready hiking footwear.
The project by INSIDE TAG arrives near the launch of A$AP Rocky's own Mostro Disccord redesign, which digs into the PUMA Archives to revive performance technology from 1991. Roberts' collaboration attempts to keep the 26-year-old design as close to its blueprint as possible, an effort inspired by the fact that Schmid's original vision was tweaked before its debut. The silhouette's "UR" distinction is a German prefix for "OG," making the "Communication Pack" canvas a historic project.
"The original Mostro UR never pops up on second hand marketplaces, so we created our own," Roberts shared on INSIDE TAG's Instagram account.
Diligently crafted, the collaborative UR Mostro features a premium leather upper saddled on a wide-looped mesh base. The high-quality material develops uniquely on each shoe, differentiating from the suede builds found on inline versions of the silhouette. Lugs across the outsole have also been tweaked, enhanced for an even more aggressive look on the inherently-bold design. An elongated heel tab and aged TPU components round out the duo, with the latter element nodding to the world in which INSIDE TAG operates.
