The fifth is the finest.
Stephen Curry fifth signature sneaker provided some design challenges for the brains trust at Under Armour, when the 2-time MVP requested something much lighter and lower, all while retaining it’s sleek and fast approach that made the Curry 4 the performance beast that it is.
“Steph is great and has really become part-design thinking and heavily function thinking as well,” says Dave Dombrow, UA’s Chief Design Officer. “With this one specifically, he was thinking about weight and how do we get lighter. He was also thinking about how do we possibly get lower.”
Like all good designers, they figured it out. And the result is spectacular.
The molded Anafoam support structure drapes across the toe and the heel is paired with a knit collar sleeve to keep the entire upper as lightweight as possible, while keeping Steph as stable as possible.
It also looks good, too, which is good news for UA, who have had challenges in the past in combining performance with aesthetic appeal.
We’re keen to see some more colorways, to see how the 5 compares in popularity to the 4 over the course of the year. Until then, the debut Under Armour Curry 5 “Welcome Home” is available right now on UA.com.
