The Air Jordan 17 "College Blue" Is Set to Return for the First Time in 25 Years

The Air Jordan 17 "College Blue" that Michael Jordan wore during his time with the Washington Wizards is expected to return for the first time ever in February 2027.

The news arrives by way of the reliable duo of X user @zSneakerHeadz and Sneaker Files, and follows a growing list of rumored Air Jordan retros for the first-half of 2027.

The Air Jordan 17 debuted in February 2002, during M.J.'s first season with the Wizards. Designed by Wilson Smith III, the silhouette was famously rooted in the idea of Jordan being the ultimate improviser on the basketball court in similar fashion to jazz musicians. Jordan's platform wasn't music, however, but instead, his offensive game. He always knew how to deal with defenders on-the-fly, often leaving audiences surprised by the moves he decided to go with.

The AJ17 continued to build on the ultra-technical executions of Jordan's signature series post-Chicago Bulls career. As such, the model was widely viewed as a performance-only proposal by many fans of earlier Air Jordan designs. Still, some collectors celebrated Smith's creation for the 38-year-old M.J., securing the sneaker despite its high-for-the-time $200 MSRP.

The original Air Jordan 17 drew its "White/College Blue/Black" color scheme from the Wizards' signature colors—in particular the Home uniform. The sneaker's debut arrived in a metal briefcase and a CD-ROM; the CD consisted as a digital guide to the silhouette's design, while the carrying case served as a nod to a traveling jazzman carrying his instrument.

After all, Air Jordans were M.J.'s instruments.

Jordan was the marquee face of the 17th entry to his signature footwear series, but a young roster of Team Jordan Athletes—including Ray Allen, Mike Bibby, Darius Miles, and Quentin Richardson—helped in cementing the design as a pinnacle expression of performance basketball. These co-signs allowed the Air Jordan 17 and its Low counterpart to appear in colors different from the "College Blue" style.

As of this writing, Jordan Brand hasn't confirmed a re-release of the Wizards-friendly AJ17, but it has been launching other takes on Smith's design over the last couple of years.

A return of the "College Blue" pair for Feb. 19, 2027 would make sense given that it would coincide with the 25th anniversary of the Air Jordan 17. The pair would form part of Jordan Brand's release schedule for 2027 NBA All-Star Weekend in Phoenix.
