One of the Air Jordan 9’s original colorways is finally coming back.

The Air Jordan 9 “Charcoal” is expected to return in Fall 2027, marking the first retro of the pair in 17 years. Originally released in 1994, the darkened colorway has only returned once before, hitting shelves again on September 4, 2010.

The “Charcoal” arrived during an unusual chapter of Michael Jordan’s career. The Air Jordan 9 debuted following his first retirement from basketball, while Jordan was pursuing professional baseball, and Tinker Hatfield’s design leaned into MJ’s growing status as a global sports icon. That international theme carried onto the outsole through various languages and symbols.

Its original look keeps things straightforward: a mostly black upper paired with Dark Charcoal overlays and contrasting red details across the branding, lining, heel “23,” and pull tabs. The 2010 retro similarly used nubuck across much of the upper, staying close to the OG Black/Dark Charcoal/True Red palette.

Exactly how closely the 2027 Air Jordan 9 “Charcoal” will follow the original remains to be seen. No official details have surfaced, and pricing, SKU information, and an exact release date have yet to be confirmed.

Expect the Air Jordan 9 “Charcoal” to return during Fall 2027 through Nike SNKRS and select Jordan Brand retailers.
