New Balance 1890 Sneaker-Moccasin Was Not on the 2025 Bingo Card
It's no secret that New Balance had long been associated with "dad shoes," but the Boston-based brand hasn't obviously played into the reputation until recently.
As a follow-up to the divisive, but influential New Balance 1906L sneaker-loafer, the century-old institution has developed the 1890, a moccasin-inspired silhouette. Reminiscent of the iconic Clarks Wallabee, the unreleased design abandons a mid-cut trim in favor of a lower collar height. Additionally, precious suede and leather are replaced (at least on the first sample to surface) with a synthetic like material that better infuses with New Balance's technical heritage.
A barely yellow makeover appears on the inaugural New Balance 1890 sneaker-moccasin, complete with beige faux snakeskin overlays across the profiles. Underfoot, the sole unit falls in line with models like the New Balance 860v2, donning cushioning and stability elements from the last decade. 1890 branding appears on the insole, presumably as a nod to the hybrid model's name.
