The New Balance 996 Returns March 3rd
Being one of the first built-for-lifestyle sneakers, 1988’s New Balance 996 was an important model for the brand, as it set the tone for the brand’s future dominance of the streetwear scene. The hybrid-style shoe was purposed for everything; running, walking, gym, and aerobics; It’s easy to see how such a versatile shoe migrated to casual wear, too.
Celebrating its 35th anniversary in 2023, the Boston-based New Balance will bring back the model with a little help from long-time collaborator Aimé Leon Dore.
Though not an official collaboration, New Balance has entrusted the Teddy Santis-directed imprint to launch a kicker, a Made In USA New Balance 996 in classic navy suede. It’s met with light blue mesh uppers, warm beige rear overlays, and sail tints to the rear clip and midsole; A black rubber outsole rests underfoot. White laces and liners work with midfoot N letter trim, while a striking red NB logo at the tongue rounds out the design.
