size? Revisits the New Balance 2002R 'Refined Future' for Its 25th Anniversary
British retailer size? continues to tease a number of impressive projects as part of its 25th anniversary celebration. The latest arrives in the form of a New Balance 2002R 'Refined Future' trio.
If you weren't paying attention to sneakers or the North American sportswear company, it's likely this is your first time coming across the 'Refined Future' aesthetic. Widely – and incorrectly – referred to as the 'Protection Pack,' the distressed design was introduced via the NB 2002R in 2021, and designed by the brand's Yue Wu (@flyin_asparagus on Instagram). Inspired by time and the idea of "wearable relics," the 'Refined Future' aesthetic brought new life to the technical silhouette, and helped make the retro runner one of the year's most popular styles.
Wu's vision landed across other models in the New Balance family, but none have been able to capture the same magic as the earliest NB 2002Rs. size?, however, faithfully revisits the concept, presenting three takes on the model rooted in the same design principles as the 'Refined Future' debut. Sole units from the Aimé Leon Dore-approved NB 860v2 reprise their roles, while the distressed uppers opt for suede, mesh, and leather builds done in shades of silver, brown, and black. Laces and 2002R logos on the lateral heel introduce a semi-yellow tone that plays into the faux-aged execution.
