From a practically forgotten-about silhouette to an Instagram indie-scene “it” shoe, the New Balance 550 has seen a transform like no other in recent times. The overarching resurgence for clunky retro hoop shoes can be pinned to the aforementioned Instagram mood boards who have been pushing the narrative for a minute, but the silhouette rose to notoriety thanks to an initial collaboration from Aime Leon Dore late last year. Now it’s time for UK’s size? to put their spin on the low-cut silhouette, and they do so alongside 1988’s 574 for a special-edition collection inspired by the world’s greatest sporting colleges.
Honing in on retro flavors of white leather, sails accents, and burnt orange accents, the duo of drops hint at colleges like Syracuse and The University of Texas in their aesetetics. The former arrives in fairly staple construction, with simple color pops at the midfoot motifs, collars, liners, heel clips and outsoles, with accent sgrey in its surrounds. On the other end of the spectrum, the 574 opts for a bold all-orange approach, with mesh and shaggy suede working in unison across the pair’s upper. Because of this, the N motifs pop unbeliveelably, as too does the ENCAP midsole sunit underfoot. Differing from the 550, the pair is completed by the introduction of black tread to complete the design.
The collection includes an assortment of college-inspired apparel for your summer rotation, including soft cotton tees, featuring classic NB branding, as well as classic sweats and hoodies, too.
The size? x New Balance ‘College Pack’ trainers land on Thursday 8th July, while the apparel will be released the following day. The shoes arrive in men’s and women’s sizes and are priced between £80 and £110.
