We thought that when the wild Nike Air Max 720 ISPAwas revealed that we’d seen it all. No way could the Swoosh’s newest tech get any more audacious than that — until Nike said ‘hold my beer…’. The new Air Max 720 Waves now hols that title, thanks to the adventurous designers of Nikes D/MS/X division.

We’re not sure what the sneaker is designed for — or who it’s designed for — but its futuristic ethos, use of premium materials and trippy mind-bending embellishments have us intrigued. The first wave of Waves arrives in two colors” White/Black and Blue/Black/Red and Green, yet each takes on a greatly differing aesthetic. Both pairs sit atop a semi-rugged outsole that’s loaded with Air Max 720 units above. Midsole pieces arrive in a similar style to the tech’s marquee model, and up top? That’s where shit gets interesting. Split ripstop and leather uppers provide a mid-cut, which overlay the toe in a Jordan 13-like manner. Those overlays hold a plethora of pop, including glazed-on overlays at the forefoot, stitched circular patterns, and wavy optical illusions on the ankle. Extra, bulbous overlays arrive on each side of the Achilles tendon, and both pairs are completed with extended pulls, buttery tumbled leather tongues and D/MS/X-branded insoles.
