There are few horror film slashers more famous than Jason Voorhees from the Friday the 13th franchise. The hockey mask-wearing, machete-wielding antagonist was first introduced in 1980, and was never meant to carry the series beyond its first film. His terrifying nature made the creators rethink their original plans, and as a result, has become one of the most prolific horror villains in film history. Over the years, Jason has gone through some costume changes, from disfigurement to potato sacks, to the hockey mask he’s most famous for. Though sinister in appearance, the mask plays a major part in the film’s financing, as it both saves costs on special-effects makeup, as well as providing a recognizable brand for merchandising. It’s this mask, along with his more recent garb in olive and black, that inspired our second sneaker concept for Shocktober 2022, the Nike SB Dunk Low “Jason Voorhees”

We’ve taken a simple approach to this conceptual colorway, with simple black nubuck and olive leather construct, with the former dressing the upper and the latter the overlays, akin to his shirt and overcoat. Dark steel Swooshes are inspired by Jason’s blood-dripping machete, while bright white toe boxes feature arranged perforations to mirror that of the infamous hockey mask. Underfoot sits a simple black and olive sole unit to complete the design.

We refrained from giving the pair a distressing, as they are, after all, SB Dunks — you can achieve that naturally from skating.

This October, we’ll be looking at a handful of horror’s most influential characters in our Concept Lab, so be sure to let us know on Twitter which horror villain you’d like to see next in the Lab.
