As the world of sneakers continues to evolve, one brand has consistently pushed the boundaries of creativity and cultural relevance: Nike SB. Over the years, this skateboarding division of Nike has developed a reputation for its unique collaborations and limited-edition releases that captivate sneakerheads and skaters alike. One such tradition that has garnered a cult following is the annual 4/20-inspired sneakers.

Skateboarding culture has long been associated with counterculture movements and a sense of rebellion, which often includes the embrace of marijuana as a symbol of defiance against societal norms. Though it completely contradicts Nike, Inc.’s values, Nike SB is a different beast; It’s success has been built upon its independence from its mega-corporation parent company; It’s quite a paradox that the brand is successful as it is. That being said, Nike as a brand can stay relevant with the youth movements by hiding behind such a progressive sub-brand; It’s a win-win.

“The fact that they’ve been able to market these shoes with direct relation to weed suggests just how off the radar the SB program is compared to the rest of the company…Could you ever imagine there being a 4/20 Nike Basketball shoe? Or a Purple Skunk football cleat?”

    — former pro skater Jimmy Gorecki

From the recalled “Strawberry Cough” to the legendary SB Dunk Low “Green Hemp”, Nike SB has provided us with some of the best 4/20 footwear the industry has ever seen – of which you can see nine of the best weed-themed sneakers here.

With no Mary J-themed release on the cards for 2023, we’ve taken it into our own hands and fired up the old Concept Lab crew for a homage-heavy Niek SB Dunk Low “4/20” — a design heavily influenced by the grandaddy of Weed Dunks, the Skunk High.

Rocking a ganja-inspired suede upper, the pair looks to supple surrounds with tonal tongues, laces, and liners. It’s given a shot of Purple aze through vibrant leather Swoosh and heel overlays, with jelly rubber outsoles to match. The art of hand-rolling is honored on the lateral heel, while solid white toe caps further that skill and provide more stability to the suede up front.
