With Chinese New Year mere weeks away, we’re beginning to notice a slew of new releases hosting an Eastern influence. With the two-pack of “NAI-KE” releaseshonoring the mythical “One Stripe” Nike sneakers, to the dedicated CNY collections, the first block of 2022 is chock-full of Asian arrangements. Then there’s this new Nike Air Force 1 High Utility 2.0 “Shapeless, Formless, Limitless” release that, like the accompanying Air Force 1 looks to ancient Eastern mantras and regional-specific accents to convey its Eastern elements.
Most famously, Bruce Lee noted that to empty your mind, you need to become formless and shapeless — like water. It’s a window to being truly limitless. And It’s something that’s obviously played an integral part in Nike’s company backstory — after all, the ever-inventing Swoosh knows no limits. The pair’s title sits on both the tongue and insole design centered around a whirlpool-like motif. There are more water themes seen across the pair’s added icy chains and jelly-green sole units, while further links to Chinese tradition arrive via three jade-look motifs at the lateral heel — features that are also present on the aforementioned Air Force 1. There’s added chrome medial eyestays and metallic-look tongues, and branding in rich reds that add to the Chinese themes.
