Nike’s headstrong approach to sustainability has resulted in some pretty creative outcomes. The audacious Space Hippie lineage carries the torch in the most obvious fashion, while the frequent use of Flyleather sits down the other end of the spectrum. Grind rubber soles have been prevalent, too, but arguably the most whimsical theme that we’ve seen so far is Nike’s “Happy Pineapple” collection — a series of sneakers that utilizes recycled pineapple fibers for the good of the Earth. Now, after the collection has revealed an Air Max 90, Air Max 95, and Free Run, the brand’s marquees silhouette is joining in on the action with this Air Force 1 “Happy Pineapple” the latest to appear.
Here, the titular character can be seen grinning from ear-to-ear on the tongue, whilst the material it refers to — recycled fruit fibers — are found on both the Swoosh and heel in a familiar shade of yellow. The former rests atop a light green underlay, all of which sits atop an upper of recycled cork. Whilst midsoles appear to be pure white on the first inspection, a closer look reveals that it’s peppered with grind rubbers, while its cinder-like outsole is again flushed with cork particles throughout.
A release date for this “Happy Pineapple” Air Force 1 is yet to be revealed, but retailers in Asia are citing a late May release. As has been the case for Stateside drops this year, you can expect it to be weeks after the fact, so be sure to keep your eyes glued to our official Twitter account for further updates. Until then, enjoy a first look at the pair here below.
