Nike’s ACG division has served the mainline Air Max lineage with plentiful inspiration over the years, yet even though most aren’t officially linked back to their outdoor division, the connection between the two lines is unyielding. Often inspiring the Air Max 97and Air Max 95, this year has seen a strong utilitarian influence hit the 30th anniversary Air Max 90. This pair is yet another, bringing in heavy-duty elements and vibrant color pops against a traditionally muted based.
Here, thick grey mesh uppers provide the base for a bevy of overlays, including mossy green fleece, tan synthetics, and jet black nubucks — the latter tacked on with the resurgent contrast stitch finish. Rubber eyelets and panels each arrive in their own unique shade working back from gold, grey, baby blue, and orange, with key utilitarian details (lace clips and compass-inspired Nike branding) completing the upper. Underfoot you’ll find a sole unit that’s as varying as the upper, with classic whites linked with flecked gum and black rubbers beneath, grey Air cassettes and orange Air supports within. Completing the design is a set of outdoor-inspired rope laces, and the recurring compass graphic emblazoned on the midsoles.
