The Air Max 95’s connection with Japan goes way back to the beginning when streetwear circles in the island nation adopted the silhouette from the jump. Over the course of 25+ years, the icon has continued to defy, swimming against the current of trends to remain one of the most-worn Air Max models in the nation. Each and every year, Nike honor Japan’s undying love for the model with a specially-themed release, this year settling on the Air Max 95 “Koi”
Though the fish itself is often vibrant in orange and white, Nike has opted for a mostly monochrome approach to the release, employing whites, greys, and blacks on the exterior alongside a handful of red pops that stay in keeping with national identity. The multi-material makeup works from ripstop uppers to netted overlays, before alternating profile panels of suede, basket-woven textiles, and leather work down the sides. All of this rests atop a murdered-out midsole with red Air supports, and a smokey-blue translucent outsole underfoot. Koi scales are depicted on both the underfoot plate and heel, with a more literal figure on the insoles; complete with Rising Sun insignia.
